Mission Statement:

The objects of the Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club shall be to encourage and promote interest in, as well as to foster the art and enjoyment of, the sport of sailing by providing the opportunity and means for the development of individual skill and knowledge, encouraging excellence in seamanship and navigation, and by providing participative events wherein these qualities can be exercised under the aegis of the LHYC burgee.

As I write this it is snowing outside, AGAIN!  If we don’t get a break soon, it’s going to be a challenge to get the boats in the water for the Spring Series.  I’m just hoping for a few dry days to varnish the cabin sole, and that’s under the tarp.  At least we can think of the upcoming events and hope they don’t get snowed out.

Upcoming Events

We have landed a very talented and experienced sailor for our Winter Speaker.  Ralf Steitz the Director of Varsity Offshore Sailing at the Merchant Marine Academy will be speaking this Wednesday, 3/30/05, (flyer enclosed and on the website).  He brings experience from 3 America’s Cup campaigns and loads of leadership skills from many other programs.  It’s going to be at the Halesite Fire Department at 1900 hrs.  Admission is free and thanks to our sponsors, Keith Goldstein, (Smith Barney), and Mike at Compass Rose there will be free beer and food.

As hard as it is to imagine, the New Members Party is almost here.  Our fearless Vice Commodore, Leigh Sterflinger, will be having it at her beautiful house, 29 Westbrook Court, Greenlawn.  It will be Saturday, April 16, 2005 at 1700 hrs.  Please RSVP at (631) 757-0799 or vicecomm@LHYC.org, (formal invitations coming soon).  This is one of our best social events with a full spectrum of members usually showing up.  Come on out and welcome our newest members into the Club.

The Huntington Bay Championship committee has begun planning this year’s event.  For those not familiar with it, this event is run in conjunction with Huntington Yacht Club and is one of the best fund raisers for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.  We’ve named it The Sail for the Cure and they are looking for some help;

The Sail for the Cure planning is well in the works. The Huntington Yacht Club has 17 volunteers to help organize this event and Lloyd Harbor currently has two. Some are there because they have had Breast Cancer or know someone close that has had it. Some are there just because they care. If you have any interest in assisting with this major fund raising event, please contact Leigh Sterflinger at 631-757-0799 or at vicecomm@LHYC.org .  We are also looking for donations for the Sail for the Cure Raffle, if you have any new items that we could use please contact Leigh. There is also the need to have the trophies for the Lloyds Trophy Race donated since all proceeds from the race go to Susan G Komen - if you are interested or know of a company that may be interested also let Leigh know. Thank you for supporting the cure!

There’s still a week or so remaining for the LHYC discount at Watch Gear in the Walt Whitman mall.  This is a great little store, specializing in outdoor/sailing watches.  Christopher Wright has arranged a 15% discount for all LHYC members for the month of March.  Just ask for him or show your LHYC membership card to receive the special pricing.

Member News

Our members continue to be active abroad this winter.  While in Florida Roy Sherman found himself impassioned with an unfinished project, an old Windmill sailboat.  He and his nephew then raced it in the Windmill Mid-Winters, taking a second place among some very prestigious competition.  While in Florida, he also joined up with some old friends and raced a J-35 in the St. Petersburg NOOD.  1st place overall, of course.  Closer to home, Roy won the JY 15 St. Patrick’s Day regatta and came in third in both the Fall ‘04 and Spring ’05 Frostbite Series.  Congratulations Roy and I’m looking forward to seeing Zephyr on the race course again this summer.

We now have four new applicants in the works; please find their names and sponsors listed below.  We also have a new Membership Chairman, thank you Jeff Wright for volunteering.  We hope to get the applicants through the process in time for the New Members Party, so any recommendations or concerns please contact Jeff ASAP, (631) 368-5612 or jwright3@optonline.net.

Mark and Judy Ambrosius, “Atlantean” Sabre 34, sponsored by Greg Letica and Rich Rubel.

Kurt and Sue Crowley, “Woozy II” Catalina 30, sponsored by Paul Eliea and Roy Berg.

Theodore and Nadine Novak, “Bechard” Catalina 42, sponsored by Doug Vaughn and Rich Rubel.

Peter and Barbara Wolpensinger, “Summer Salts” Sabre 34, sponsored by Paul Eliea and Roy Berg.

This month’s pictures are quite impressive.  It is one of the Storck gang celebrating their third place finish at Key West Race Week.  At least this will help us all to remember the turbulence you can encounter in the transition layer between the warm southern sailing and the “back to the grindstone” cold winter here in the northeast.  Congratulations and sympathies, (I know how much you guys love this boat and hope it can be salvaged).

We are currently in the process of doing a survey to establish the needs of the membership - watch your email and expect a phone call from one of our board members who will be contacting you. We thank you in advance for your cooperation regarding this matter.  To assist with this, I’ve also enclosed the draft of the 2005 schedule again this month.  If you have any ideas on how to improve it, please mention it during the survey.

As dictated by the By-Laws, below is the list of members that haven’t paid their 2005 dues yet.  We will need to go to print on the new Roster soon, so in order to be in it, please mail in $133.75 to PO Box 60, Huntington NY 11743 ASAP.

We have been very fortunate this year finding sponsors.  Through their assistance, (both financially and services provided), we have been able to keep the dues down over the years and still maintain all club functions.  Please patronize and express your thanks to them if possible, and if you can think of anyone else that would like to sponsor us please let me know, (631) 549-2902 or commodore@LHYC.org.
